Attendance information

DID YOU KNOW?

• Absences can be a sign that a teen is losing interest, struggling with school work, dealing with a bully or facing some other difficulty.

• By 6th grade, absenteeism is one of three signs that a student may drop out of high school.

Missing 10% of one semester (just 8 days a semester) can drastically affect a student’s academic success.

• Attendance is an important life skill that will help your teen be successful in the workforce.

• By 9th grade, attendance is a better predictor of graduation rates than 8th grade test scores.

• Failing to earn credits due to excessive absences is a major reason students fall behind in high school, leading to a high risk of not graduating on time or dropping out altogether.

WHAT YOU CAN DO?

Contact LAHS office and let them know when your student will be absent. (405) 329-1612 or HSattendance@littleaxeps.org

• Be sure the parent(s)/guardian(s) phone numbers and emails are current with the school.

Call the high school office if you’re having trouble logging in to Sylogist to check attendance.

Know the attendance policy and the consequences for absences.

Check your teen's grades weekly on Sylogist and seek help from teachers or after school tutoring.

•Stay on top of your teen’s social contacts. Peer pressure can lead to skipping class. Teens who have a hard time making friends can feel isolated.

• Encourage your child to join meaningful school activities, including sports and clubs. The more involved they are in school activities the better their attendance is.

Make School Attendance a Priority

•Talk about the importance of showing up to school every day so your teen knows this is your expectation.

•Encourage your student to maintain daily routines, such as finishing homework or getting a good night’s sleep.

•Avoid scheduling non-urgent dental and medical appointments when classes are in session.

•Post the LAPS district calendar on the refrigerator.
