Parents/Guardians of Little Axe Elementary School,
Per district (Policy EEI), Little Axe Elementary Schools require a criminal background check on all parents, guardians or other responsible persons for a child’s well-being while volunteering for a school function or trip. This includes but is not limited to LAE volunteers, mentors, field trip chaperones, etc. All background checks are required to be submitted a minimum of two weeks prior to the event to allow time for processing. You will only be notified if you fail the background check. Background check information is public record, but because of the sensitivity of the materials and the confidentiality of the person’s identity information, failed background checks will only be discussed with the applicant who filled out the background check form and the Principal/Designee of the school.
Criteria for LAE Volunteer Background Checks
If the following charges appear on a volunteer’s criminal background check, the volunteer will NOT be permitted to volunteer in our schools. Volunteer criminal background checks are evaluated on charges filed, not disposition of the charges.
Felony charge within the last 10 years
Drug charge (felony or misdemeanor) within the last 10 years
Battery charges within the last 10 years
Child abuse or neglect charge within the last 10 years
Theft charge within the last 7 years (typically a felony)
Two or more DUIs or alcohol related charges within the last 5 years
Any charge currently pending
Any misrepresentation on the volunteer request
Any other charge not mentioned above, but determined to be a risk to the staff and/or students
Any listing on a currently accessed state and national Sex Offender Registry
All valid background checks are good for 2 school years. After two school years, volunteers will be required to submit a new background check and the status as a volunteer will be reconsidered. If a person is denied permission to volunteer in our schools due to pending charges, the person can request their volunteer status be re-evaluated once the pending charges are resolved.
All volunteer background checks will be completed through OSBI (https://chirp.osbi.ok.gov/) and sent to tori.drake@littleaxeps.org. The cost is $20.00 which the volunteer is responsible for paying.
Background checks are NOT required for: Meet the Teacher Nights, Parent Teacher Conferences, attending extracurricular or other school sponsored events as a spectator: i.e. assemblies, sporting events etc.
